Fonuafoʻou [foh-NOO-ah-foh-OH-oh] is a volcanic island roughly 500 miles southeast of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. Once known as Falcon Island, it has spent more than a century appearing, vanishing, and returning again. Just 56 feet beneath the surface lies the volcano that gives the island its fleeting life. First recorded in 1867, it disappeared before later sailors could find it. It rose again in 1885, only to be reclaimed by the sea by 1894. It returned from 1927 to 1949, emerged once more in 1970, and has since eroded away. Fonuafoʻou is never truly gone. The island is so special, because of this fleeting nature, as not many islands in the world are this flighty. Each return is precious because it, too, will be washed away.
