Annapurna I [ah-nuh-POOR-nuh] is the deadliest mountain in the world, with a fatality-to-summit rate of 20–32%. What's even more staggering is that it's almost exclusively attempted by experienced mountaineers. The mountain rises 8,091 meters above sea level in the Himalayas of Nepal and is named after the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment, who is said to reside there. Its south face is considered one of the hardest climbing routes in the world. In recent years, skilled Sherpas and modern technology have made the ascent safer, but the altitude, avalanches, and technical climbing will always demand respect. Annapurna I doesn't become less beautiful because it's dangerous. If anything, its beauty and its danger have always existed together, and serves as a reminder that not everything breathtaking was meant to be conquered.
